Yoga and longevity - do you know how they correlate?

December 25, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva
Yoga-and-longevity

Almost in every class, I challenge my students to go down from standing to sit down on the floor without using their hands or knees. This simple transition requires muscle tone, hip mobility, and balance.

Ever since I discovered that this simple skill reflects on how long we are going to live, I started integrating elements of it into my classes. There are a few transitions and exercises that I teach in almost every class to help my students live longer.

Emotional Release Yoga - how it all started

November 28, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva
backbends

It all started 11 years ago…

When for the first time in my ashtanga practice I did a deep backbend assisted by a friend, came out of it and started sobbing uncontrollably.

My friend asked me why I cried. I said I did not know. But she persisted.

“Of course you know!”, she exclaimed.

Insomnia cure with Emotional Release Yoga

November 26, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva

Yesterday I received some sad news I did not expect coming - I lost 3 classes at a gym where I teach.

In a snap of a finger, my world was turned upside down. One moment I was coming out of my class feeling elated because two people gave me such beautiful feedback, thanked me and said they were my fans. And a moment later I was in my car driving to pick up Dan from school and sobbing at my loss.

You would say that an Emotional Release Yoga Teacher would know better and will do what she preaches straight away - do the practice of Emotional Release!

Well, she did not…Not straight away anyway.

transformation-vs-innate-goodness

The power of Manifesting is something I have learned by myself through meditation practice and now I teach this process to others through Emotional Release Yoga.

I use this tool all the time. There is always something I want to manifest either for myself or those close to me.

Emotional Release Yoga - Unpacking Anger

October 14, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva

I was 30 and I was angry.

It was a rough patch of my life. A relationship of 11 years just fell apart and I quit my corporate job. I had very little money because I started a business - Astanga Yoga School Amsterdam.

I was sad and could no longer put a happy smile on my face. And when I finally admitted to my parents that I wasn’t doing well, they could not take it so well, too. The easy go-lightly Madina wasn’t there and it was hard on them.

My first website was created in 2008.

11 years have passed since then and madinayoga.com is my third creation.

I made lots of mistakes and honestly had no idea that my website could be something more than a mere virtual business card.

No matter what sort of website you have got as a yoga teacher, the number one thing you want to have on it is actually YOU!

How to celebrate Easter in a meaningful way?

April 15, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva

Being interested in old traditions, I once looked up what Passover was about spiritually. As the Jewish community celebrates walking away from slavery and discovering freedom, Passover is the time for us to reflect on our attachments and things that enslave us.

Slavery for me is anything I do, which does not serve me. It is about interactions that are not rewarding, it is about connections where I am not appreciated.

This Easter I invite you all to think of things that hold you back, things that do not serve you, relationships that do not raise you.

Emotional Release Yoga - Dealing with anger

February 19, 2019 Madina Tanekeyeva

Last week I taught restorative and yin classes sequenced around liver - gallbladder meridians.

With anger being the main emotion associated with this pair of organs, I feel there is so much to talk about this misunderstood emotion.

To me more often then not, anger is a a secondary cover-up emotion that stems from powerlessness. That’s when I can’t voice my needs, put up boundaries, change my attitude or claim my power.

This inability is often related to my unwillingness to be disciplined, to address my patterns and limiting beliefs.

To demonstrate or not to - that is the question

December 14, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva
2018-11-06+Madina-by-EL-09_1500px+%28Custom%29.jpg

I see this discussion popping up here and there regularly on yoga teacher groups. As with many things, there are teachers, who strongly oppose demonstrating in class. And there are those, who think that demonstration is absolutely necessary.

Typically, beginners teachers feel more comfortable demonstrating. This is simply because they need more refining of their verbal cues and more confidence in giving hands-on assist.

So what should we do in a class?

New yoga teacher - what’s next?

As I moderate a few yoga groups on Facebook, I often see new yoga teachers asking for help and guidance in regards to starting their new exciting teaching career. And by new teachers I mean anyone who just did their training or up to 2 years into their teaching journey.

Yoga business - a success story

November 22, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva
Casey.jpg

As I celebrated 12 years of teaching yoga this October 2018 I contemplated on how rapidly our industry has evolved and grown.

I remember the easier years when in 2010 I opened a yoga studio in Amsterdam, and it took us just 3 months to start breaking even. I remember days when I would teach massive workshops of 30-40 people in each without having a big name or being a yoga celebrity just 3 years into my teaching career.

Today, however, things are different. The yoga market is saturated, there are many more yoga teachers nearly done with their training and are eager to join our teaching sangha. This is the reason why these days we have to be creative, innovative and business-like if we want to succeed.

So I decided to look for people who approach this business creatively, people who look outside of the box and come up with great ideas.

My first interview is with Casey Castro, the owner of Sydney Yoga Collective.

Chakras - what are they?

September 24, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva

What makes your heart beat? What makes the planets spin and fly through space? What makes you breathe?

According to ancient Indian knowledge - it’s all thanks to prana. Roughly translated from Sanskrit as breath, life force or energy. It flows through our body through Nadis, which are energy channel (Nadi is also translated as “river”).

There are three main channels in our energy body, all of them running from the base of the spine all the way up to the crown of the head. The 7 points where these channels cross - is where prana creates whirlpools or wheels of energy - chakras (translated from Sanskrit as “wheel”).

Yoga Instructor versus Teacher

September 21, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva
2018-Luminocity-Madina-by-Elena-Levkovskaya-002.jpg

What makes me a Yoga teacher versus a Yoga instructor?

A yoga instructor is someone who simply leads a class. You hear your instructor directing you what pose is next, to step a foot forward, to lift an arm up.

An instructor merely leads you through practice, giving you a feeling that you’ve worked out. A yoga teacher is actually TEACHING you how to do poses. How to position yourself in space, what to engage, where to relax. Coming out of a class with a teacher, you can say that you have learnt something and gained a valuable piece of information. Be it alignment, philosophy etc.

The art of sequencing

August 8, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva
yoga beyond asana (2).jpg

We all know this blissed out feeling of coming out of a class being whole, complete, balanced, tuned up. A good class for me is when I get up from savasana and have no urge to do one more pose. I do not want one more little stretch or another handstand. It is when my whole body was addressed and my mind cleared.

Hold your teacher accountable

August 3, 2018 Madina Tanekeyeva
guru.jpg

How could someone who inspired one person, hurt another? Being a yoga teacher, how can I make sure no-one gets hurt by my actions and words. I see many people daily. I care about them. And I am not perfect. Yoga teachers continue their yoga study through passing the knowledge on. We too deal with our emotions, patterns, shortcomings and issues.

I understand and accept that every aspect of life has the good and the bad. This universal law is no exception for Gurus. The three masters I mentioned above gave a lot to the world. They produced amazing students, they transformed lives. Mine included. And they misbehaved too.
